Partnership of FMIPA IPB and Columbia University

Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Bogor Agricultural University (FMIPA IPB) together with the Center for Environment Economy and Society at Columbia University (Columbia University CEES) partnership in the proposal of a USAID grant. The title of the proposed grant program is a Supporting Quality of STEM Teaching in Secondary Schools in Indonesia through a partnership between the Bogor Agricultural University and Columbia University. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

The program has developed intensively since June 2012 by a team of IPB as well as teams from Columbia University. The chance of IPB – Columbia University to receive this grant is quite high. In the third week in October 2012 USAID has approved various revisions submitted by IPB – UC team. Including the name of the program that is now shorter but without losing the meaning contained therein. Currently the name proposed by IPB – UC is the School Action for Innovations in Science or SAInS in short.

In addition to involving Columbia University – New York, this program also collaborated with Teachers College Columbia University, State University of Malang, and the State University of Jakarta. In particular, SAInS will be implemented to the IPB Lab School SMA Kornita, and SMA Negeri 13 Jakarta and SMA Negeri 1 Malang Kepanjen. Goals to be achieved through the USAID grant will be improving capacity of FMIPA IPB as a source of expertise in science pedagogy and teacher training, to transform the three high school into model schools of STEM implementation, as well as raising public awareness of the importance of STEM application in school environment.
