Pine Resin-Based Carbon: A Promising Material for Medical Mask Filters

Scientists have successfully synthesized carbon microstructures from pine resin (gondorukem) using spray pyrolysis, a method that efficiently produces carbon materials. By testing different solvents—acetone, ethyl acetate, and dichloromethane—researchers found that carbon derived from the acetone-based (GAC) process had the highest carbon content (97.3%) and optimal chemical stability, making it a strong candidate for medical mask filters. Meanwhile, carbon from the ethyl acetate (GEA) process exhibited the best porosity and surface area, further supporting its potential as a high-performance filtration material. This breakthrough highlights gondorukem’s potential in sustainable material development for health applications.

This research supports SDG 3 by offering a new filtration material for medical masks, improving air quality and respiratory health protection. It also aligns with SDG 9 by advancing carbon material technology, which could lead to better filtration systems and biomedical applications. Additionally, it contributes to SDG 12 by utilizing natural and renewable resources like pine resin, promoting eco-friendly material innovation for health and industrial use.
